SF Works is a small entrepreneurial nonprofit with a mission
to build the careers and self-sufficiency of entry-tier and low-income workers.
Our programs respond to both employees' aspirations for self-sufficiency and
advancement, and to employers' demands for return on investment. SF Works’
programs make a measurable difference in the lives of low-wage workers in San
Francisco, connecting them with programs and resources to save money and better
make ends meet. We are housed within the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce.
SF Works works through and with San Francisco businesses to help their low-wage
workers. We are seeking a pro bono corporate communications expert to help us
shape the messaging for two services – one is a B2B service and the other
engages low-income job seekers, vocational counselors, and business hiring and
finance managers.
We need 5-10 hours a week of hands-on communications work and professional
guidance, and can be flexible about work days and times. We can provide references
for future employment, valuable nonprofit experience, and a quality consulting project
experience. This project is unpaid.
The ideal candidate will have 5 or more years of experience:
- writing copy and shaping talking points to sell services
to businesses of all sizes
- writing copy and shaping internal communications between departments or
teams at medium and large businesses to change the way teams work together
or communicate with one another
- crafting communication materials for new and innovative products, disruptive
technologies and/or brand new markets
- conceiving and executing lean and mean external communications campaigns
- be familiar with several San Francisco business sectors such as retail,
restaurant and hospitality industries
- be experienced with reaching internal decision makers within medium and
large businesses in finance and human resources
- writing press releases and pitching stories to the media (optional but ideal)
- working within or closely with a Human Resources department
- have experience communicating to a broader array of audiences, including
entry-level management and lower-waged job seekers (optional but ideal)
The job will involve:
- learning about our services, with our guidance
- providing guidance and strategic advice about our organization's communications
needs
- drafting a lean, low- or no-budget communications plan for each of two services
- crafting service descriptions to various stakeholders, including human resources
and finance teams within businesses, nonprofit service providers, job seekers
and government agencies
- creating communications that provide clarity and instructions for a new
business process
- writing brochure or marketing copy to articulate the service opportunities
- writing press releases and success stories to articulate results of current
service; serving as primary press liaison to field inquiries and arrange interviews
- pitching stories to the media about our current successes
If interested, please submit a resume and cover letter describing how you meet
these qualifications to staff@sfworks.org. Resumes without cover letters will
be disregarded. No phone calls please.
