SF Works was founded in 1997 by the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce, the Committee on Jobs and the United Way of the Bay Area as a business response to welfare-to-work. Since then, we have expanded our focus to include business-driven solutions that serve dislocated workers and workers earning under $40,000 per year.
Since 1997 we have:
- Advocated for and spearheaded the creation of the Working Families Credit, a City program that helps low-income families access the federal Earned Income Tax Credit and other valuable benefits and supports
- Assisted more than 16,000 low-income working families in the first two years of the San Francisco Working Families Credit
- Created 15 employer-led training programs in the health care, biotech, legal services, insurance/financial services, banking, automotive repair, building maintenance and telecommunications sectors
- Co-founded EARN, the nation's first large-scale individual development account initiative, to build assets for low-income individuals
- Placed more than 300 individuals in jobs, achieving more than 75% retention
- Engaged more than 200 local employers in welfare-to-work
- Produced an unprecedented report, Fast Forward: the Business Case for Workforce Partnerships
