SF Works’ Career Development programs build the skills and increase career opportunities for entry-tier and low-income workers in specific sectors.
Legal STAR
With philanthropic funding for the Legal STAR 60-hour training program having concluded in June 2007, the program is temporarily on hold until new funding is secured. As the lunch series and training program are intended to be complementary, SF Works has decided to postpone the next lunch series until the training program resumes.
Legal STAR is a program designed to boost job performance and career advancement of entry-level workers in the legal services industry. The program offers legal services professionals and their firms a choice of two hands-on career development tools, a full 60-hour training program and a lunch series program. Legal STAR is run in conjunction with the San Francisco Bar Association and Jewish Vocational Services.
60-Hour Training Program
The 60-hour training program is offered twice each year, in spring and fall. It focuses on enhancing the communication skills of workers, while also aiding them in the development of individualized career plans.
Since 2003, 55 entry-level legal services workers from 24 law firms completed the 60-hour program. Of the 34 graduates having so far passed the 12-month post-completion benchmark, 76% have secured wage increases averaging 11%.
Lunch Series
Since 2006, 140 entry-level legal services professionals have attended one or more Legal STAR lunches with support from their firms. The Legal STAR lunch series offers personal and career development tools and tips to entry-level legal services employees, and features panelists representing a variety of the largest Bay Area firms. Each series includes four lunches on a key theme.
