Local Hospitals and Restaurants Help Employees Keep More of What They Earn
This tax season, SF Works is launching a technology solution that boosts San Francisco employers’ ability to support their entry-tier and low-wage employees (those earning less than $40,000 per year, or $19.48 per hour if full-time.) The Portal will streamline screening and application for free tax preparation and a series of tax credits, community resources, discounts and benefits, making it possible for employees to save as much as $5,000 per year without having to take time off from work to apply for these savings.
SF Works’ portal will “go-live” in February 2008 with three major hospitals - CPMC, UCSF Medical Center and Kaiser Permanente - and several local restaurants, including 1300 on Fillmore and Yoshi’s SF. We expect our unique approach of reaching workers at their place of employment, coupled with a technology solution that simplifies screening of work supports, to become a model that will be expanded over time to multiple San Francisco employers.
In Q2 of 2008, the employee savings component of the portal will be complemented by a parallel employer component that will streamline and augment employers’ ability to realize significant tax credit savings. The portal will allow eligible employers to individually screen - or receive business assistance in screening - their employees for state and local Enterprise Zone credits, and Federal Renewal Community and Work-Opportunity Tax Credits. By linking the employee and employer savings via the portal, employers not only stand to realize significant tax savings, but also to benefit from a more stable, loyal and productive workforce. If you are interested in learning more about the portal, please contact portal(at)sfworks(dot)org.
