Family Economic Success Policy Briefing

On May 13th, the San Francisco Family Support Network (FSN) and the Department of Children, Youth, and their Families (DCYF) co-hosted the first annual Family Economic Success Policy Briefing. The briefing launched FSN’s Policy Agenda, created by its policy committee, on which SF Works serves. DCYF set the stage by releasing new data about the status of families in San Francisco and shared the newly released Self-Sufficiency Standard for San Francisco, which highlights the fact that a family of three in San Francisco County needs income from more than two full-time minimum-wage jobs to pay for the most basic living expenses.

Californians for Economic Self-Sufficiency just completed customizing and updating the Family Economic Self-Sufficiency Standard for California which calculates the income needed by working families to meet their basic needs for 156 family types in every county. The Self-Sufficiency Standard measures how much income is needed for a family of a certain composition living in a particular county to adequately meet its minimal basic needs. It is based on the costs families face on a daily basis – housing, food, child care, out-of-pocket medical expenses, transportation, and other necessary spending – and provides a complete picture of what it takes for families to make ends meet.
