Business Innovation Conversations

The April 3rd Building a Socially-Responsible Brand for Conscious Consumers Conversation addressed how "sustainability" has become the new mantra for values-driven business. Moderated by BBMG, the branding and integrated marketing agency that helps socially-responsible businesses to build, motivate and succeed, panelists shared how they have built their brands with conscious consumers in mind. Highlights included:

  • BBMG’s Kim Davis noted that with so much choice for consumers, values are what distinguish these businesses in the market. Davis moderated a panel that explored how businesses’ values are reflected in the brand, the challenges faced in trying to maintain a socially-conscious brand, and how employee buy-in is key to brand success.

  • Ann Thrupp discussed how Fetzer Vineyards began by trying to do things a different way, but never boasted about it. Now they are telling their story, having proven that values can sustain change in the face of growth and new investors. The company also attributes its low turnover to its values-based business: “We have over 200 employees who feel good about coming to work every day.”

  • Jeff Mendelson stated that for New Leaf Paper "sustainability" has always been the opportunity and not the challenge. Noting the challenges that come with growth, Mendelson is nevertheless confident about New Leaf's brand: "When we're coming from a genuine place, our product, our message is genuine"

  • Café Gratitude founders Terces and Matthew Engelhart set out to develop a brand that was transformational for all stakeholders, from employees to customers. "Our first investments are our people - your people are your promotion. If you make your life and work about making a difference, people and customers will want to be around you.”

SF Works will resume the series this Fall - stay tuned for the lineup!
